The Theatre Department at Virginia Intermont College presents the contemporary play Next Fall by Geoffrey Nauffts as its season opener. A unique, bold and surprising theatrical offering, Next Fall was presented on Broadway in 2010 and received Tony nominations for Best Play and Best Director.
Next Fall is the story of Adam and Luke, a couple very much in love yet polarized by divergent religious beliefs: Luke is a Christian while Adam is an atheist. Parents and friends who cross their paths each have a strong religious conviction of their own. All are pulled into a challenge that none of them wanted by a tragic incident that makes them examine their lives and beliefs. Ben Brantley writes in the New York Times: “[Next Fall] considers how the need to believe in something beyond other people tests relationships – among lovers, friends and family members.”
VI Theatre Professor Bonny Gable directs the play, while VI Special Events Coordinator Will Hankins is the technical director. Lighting and sound design is by theatre major Paul Pratt, and stage management is by VI theatre majors Salonia Thorn, Shelby Gage and Avian Schmigiel. Technical assistance is by VI students Brey Warren, Stephanie Nix and Teddy Hart.
The play’s cast includes VI Theatre majors Will Duff as Luke, Mary Hannah Garber as Arlene, Chris Hobbs as Adam, Rob Lamb as Butch, Stephanie McIntyre as Holly, and VI theatre alumnus Ryan Gray as Brandon.
The play contains adult themes and language and is not recommended for children.
Performances are October 17, 18, and 19 at 7:30 pm and October 20 at 2:30 pm in Trayer Theatre in the Anne Worrell Fine Arts Center on the VI campus.
