Virginia Intermont senior Austin Dunleavy of Dublin, Ireland is not ready to have his college soccer days end just yet. Dunleavy was a standout on the field Thursday night where he totaled 5 shots, and the one that found the back of the net was the deciding factor in the Cobras 1-0 victory over the Knights of St. Andrews University.
It was a total team effort for the Cobras, whose defense was almost impenetrable. The back four that boasts three seniors (Ross Stallworthy, Charles Leonhardt and Juan Carlos Molina) allowed only three attempts on the goal the entire game. Sophmore Jack Austin, the only underclassman starting on the back line, was not quiet either. Austin was a force for the Cobras handling anyone from the Knights when they would try to advance the ball in to the Cobra defensive zone.
Junior Joe Buhrts was once again outstanding in goal for the Cobras. As the recipient of the AAC Defensive Player of the Week earlier this season for his performance against St. Andrews, Buhrts once again held the Knights scoreless on the evening, stopping each of the shots on goal he faced.
The Cobras are heading to the AAC tournament finals for the second year in a row. Learning from last years’ experience, the Cobras hope to be heading back to Bristol with a conference championship trophy in hand. Follow the Cobras’ progress through the finals here.
