VI Equestrians travel to Tournament of Champions with hopes to defend championship

Virginia Intermont College will field eight riders and one Medal rider to compete this Saturday, Jan. 25, in the third and final show of the Tournament of Champions, held at University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va.

Blake Roberts (SR) will show in the open over fences section as well as the medal competition. Ashleigh Ramey (SR), Lizzie Tirado (SR) and Bailey Halverson (SOPH) will represent Virginia Intermont in open, intermediate and novice flat, respectively. Megan Lanham (SR) will move up a division and compete in the Intermediate over fences class for the first time. The last over fences rider, Morgan Workman (SOPH), will show in the novice over fences. Rounding out the team is Karissa Donohue (SOPH) riding in the walk/trot/canter class and Chris Mendoza (JR) in the walk/trot.

“Virginia Intermont is the defending champion, so the level of determination is strong among VI riders to win the trophy and title for another year,” said VI Head Riding Coach Lisa Moosmueller-Terry.

The Tournament of Champions Series is an invitational, three-part competition featuring the top regional teams in the nation. It was conceived by Jim Arrigon, IHSA National Secretary, as a way to get national competition exposure for IHSA riders prior to the actual National Horse Show. In fact, the Holiday Tournament held this past December at Centenary College, Hackettstown, N.J., was referred to as “mini Nationals.” The VI riders did well, finishing 6th.

“This weekend the winner of the overall series will be determined by adding the top two scores out of the three tournaments,” Moosmueller-Terry explained. “Virginia Intermont is currently in a tie for fifth place coming into the last show, and the points are fairly tight so the trophy is up for grabs.”

Good luck to our VI equestrians!
