Virginia Intermont women’s basketball team will dedicate the game Monday night to cancer awareness, in memory of VI friend Willie Belcher who passed away two years ago from a rare form of cancer, Leiomyosarcoma. Willie served as sports information director at VI for five years and remained on as an administrative assistant after her diagnosis in 2010. A tireless supporter and source of inspiration, Willie exemplified courage to those around her.
Tipping off at 6:30 p.m., the game was rescheduled from an earlier date having been postponed due to weather. The Cobra Den will be clad in ribbons and posters, and supporters are encouraged to wear purple or any cancer awareness colors to honor those who have battled cancer.
“The Belcher family is like my family in America,” said Lithuania native and basketball player Radvile Autukaite. “Willie was like my second mom, so this night means a lot to me. In her memory we are staying strong and trying to do things like this that will make her proud of us. We want to honor Willie Belcher and everything she has done for athletes and Virginia Intermont College.”
