Where Safety is Foremost

The Virginia Intermont Security Department is dedicated to providing a safe environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors. Through the combined experience of our security officers, as well as their specialized and continuous training in partnership with local and state law enforcement and fire departments, VI Campus Security is ready to handle any situation that may arise.

The Director of Security, Jerry O’Dell, is a certified police officer with more than 25 years on the force. Under his direction,┬áVI’s Security Department ensures that every incident is investigated and every call is answered. Whether you need assistance getting into your room or would feel safer with an officer escorting you from the parking lot at night, our officers are here to assist you whenever you need them.

As part of the services provided by our Security Department, we ask that all students sign up to receive text alerts. These alerts inform students of situations that may pose a threat to their safety such as inclement weather or severe storms as well as making them aware of school closings, delayed schedules or other situations that require their attention. Students can sign up for text alerts by following the instructions here (families have the option of signing up as well).

While our text alert system is the preferred method of communication, we also offer email alerts as well as utilize RA’s and other staff to ensure students are aware of any threats to their safety. All of our RA’s are provided some basic training to help assist security in emergency situations and students may volunteer to assist as well.

Security can be reached 24 hours a day, seven days a week by calling the office at 276-466-7950 or by cell at 423-335-7998. We encourage students and their families to enter these two numbers into their cell phones immediately so they are readily available.

The Virginia Intermont Security Office is please to serve you as part of the VI community. Be safe!
