Foundational Academic Tutoring Center
Do your palms begin to sweat at the thought of defining the Pythagorean Theorem or solving a quantitative expression?
Or picture this: It is the fourth week of the semester, and your first paper is due in English Composition 101 You’ve listened intently, taken notes and completed the exercises, but still feel uneasy about presenting your paper to the professor. What should you do?
If you have these feelings, you are not alone. The good news is that VI provides free peer tutorial assistance, helping students review old concepts and build a solid foundation for subsequent math courses, and to lead students into better writing habits by connecting them with peer tutors who have already succeeded in many of VI’s writing-intensive courses.
The staff consists of a full-time director and several part-time peer tutors.
Math tutors excel in math and are highly recommended by faculty. Students seeking help will be paired with a tutor who has previously completed, or is currently enrolled in, the same math course as the tutee. The director provides additional assistance and answers any questions the tutors or tutees may have.
Writing advisors are students who have demonstrated writing excellence in many of VI’s writing-intensive courses, received faculty recommendations, and have been trained by the director. They work individually with students to increase their knowledge of the writing process and to encourage their growth as independent writers.
FATC also offers an email paper review system. Email your paper to FATC@vic.edu along with your name, your teacher’s name, the class and the writing assignment and a tutor will review your paper and send it back to you. Allow 48 hours response time for this service.
