Dean of Student Development
Virginia Intermont College is seeking a dynamic, experienced student development professional for the position of Dean of Student Development. The Dean of Student Development reports to the President, serves as a member of the college’s leadership team and provides management and leadership for the student affairs areas, which include residence life, athletics, student health services and counseling, career counseling, student activities, and campus security. The Dean of Student Development will work collaboratively with other campus units to provide students with the tools necessary to fully engage them in the college experience.
Essential Functions:
- Manages departments that provide student and college-wide support services: Campus Safety and Security, Student Health Services, Student Government, and Student Housing and Judicial Affairs.
- Manages departments that provide student learning and development: Career Services, Student Activities and Student Leadership.
- Responsible for the learning and development of the student outside the classroom.
- Helps to establish a student culture where diversity is encouraged and where students learn to respect differences, take responsibility for their actions and exercise leadership.
- Provides leadership in and is responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of policies and regulations pertaining to student life, especially student conduct, student residences and those related to alcohol and drug use.
- Develops and coordinates policies and procedures relative to all student activities; updates the Student Handbook and other documents
- Administers the policies and regulations of the college as they pertain to students including internal college judicial and disciplinary procedures.
- Develops and manages divisional budget.
- Manages Athletic Department through the guidance of the Athletic Director.
- Serves as ambassador for the college with alumni, parents, students, neighbors, community leaders and professional colleagues.
- Responsible for other duties as delegated or assigned by the President.
- This job description shall include, but is not necessarily limited to, the above duties. May temporarily perform other duties assigned to maintain operations and services.
- Serves on President’s Cabinet the administrative body responsible for making decisions regarding the operation of the College.
The ideal candidate will have a master’s degree in higher education administration or related area; four to six years of progressively responsible experience in student development administration; a successful record of management, budgeting, planning and developing residence life programs; an understanding of Student Development theory; a successful record in developing community; and the ability to effectively manage multiple programs. This position supervises a staff of approximately 35 full-time and part-time employees.
