SPECIAL INFORMATION TO INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS

Virginia Intermont College attracts a cosmopolitan group of students who represent many states and over 20 countries. International students are welcomed, and our small college, with its warm and friendly atmosphere, provides an ideal environment for students who are in the States for the first time.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION: The minimum requirement for admission to Virginia Intermont is graduation from secondary school with grades that earn recommendation for admission to college from one's secondary school. International students whose first language is other than English should present evidence of at least moderate fluency in English. Students who will take college mathematics should meet minimum prerequisites as specified in the college catalog.

The credits of each international applicant will be considered with regard to the educational requirements and system of the applicant's country. Transcripts should specify exactly which subjects were studied in high school or college preparatory school and for how long. If school transcripts are not in English, all documents should be accompanied by a certified translation. If you plan to transfer college credit from your country, you must forward a copy of the catalog to our Admissions Office.

STUDENTS WHOSE FIRST LANGUAGE IS NOT ENGLISH: International (and Puerto Rican) students whose first language is other than English should present evidence of their ability to speak a moderate extent in English. The English as a Second Language (ESL) program at Virginia Intermont is intended to help students who have already studied English but need additional study to be successful in an American college. Therefore, international students whose first language is not English are required to have a minimum of three years of high school level English and a TOEFL score of 500 or acceptable grades at an intensive English-language program (preferably one in the United States that offers at least twenty hours or more of instruction a week for several months). Because most of our ESL courses are offered only during the fall semester, international students should try to begin their studies in the fall. Minimum English requirements are higher for students entering the spring semester.

New international students are tested at the beginning of each semester to learn their current ability to speak, read and write in English. They are then advised by the ESL faculty as to the specific ESL and/or regular college courses they are prepared to take.

Obviously, the better your English background, the sooner you can probably take regular college courses. One benefit of our program for you is that a maximum of seventeen ESL credit hours taken at Virginia Intermont may be applied toward the requirements for graduation. Taking ESL courses prepares you to do better in regular college courses. You may also want to come to the United States before your first year in college to take courses in an intensive English program. If so, we will be happy to provide information about such programs.

STUDENTS FROM BRITISH-PATTERNED EDUCATIONAL SYSTEMS: (Great Britain, East and West Africa, Hong Kong, West Indies, Guyana, Etc.) You should supply us with certified copies of all school certificates, diplomas, and/or testimonials, GCE, "O" or "A" levels, if you took them, or the Hong Kong Certificate of Educational Results, if this applies. If you took your examination within the year and have not received your certificate, send the mark sheets or official record of your marks. All other students must submit certified copies of their certificates.

STUDENTS FROM OTHER AREAS: You must submit all secondary school grade reports, diplomas or certificates or examination results that show completion of your present studies, which subjects you studied, and what grades or results you received. (For example, students from French-patterned schools should submit evidence of having passed the Baccalaureate; from Israeli schools, the Bagrut; etc.) If you have completed any advanced work on the college level, a transcript should be sent from your college, and the work will be evaluated by the Registrar of Virginia Intermont College.

DEADLINES: Virginia Intermont observes a "rolling admission" system and students may be admitted as late as August preceding the beginning of the school term. New students are admitted in the fall and again for the second semester in mid-January. However, international students should consider the time which will be required to obtain a visa, so application should be made and papers filled as early as possible.

RECOMMENDED TESTS: The tests which most applicants to Virginia Intermont submit is the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). To register for the test, one applies directly to the College Board, Box 592, Princeton, N.J. 08540, USA. When you take the test, you must show that the results should be sent to Virginia Intermont. This is done by coding our number (5857) in Box 9 of the registration form which you will complete when you arrive at the test center. If your first language is not English, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is usually the best indication of your degree of English fluency. To register for TOEFL, you may apply directly to TOEFL Application Office, P.O. Box 899R, Princeton, N.J. 08541, USA, or you may apply through a school in your country. When you take the test, you must show that the results should be sent to Virginia Intermont College by coding our school number (5857). The TOEFL results help ESL faculty in placing you in courses commensurate with your abilities. If you took the SAT or the TOEFL before you became interested in Virginia Intermont, you should write a letter to the College Board at the above address, including your name, address, birth date, and sex, and request that they send the test results to Virginia Intermont. If the SAT or the TOEFL is not readily available in your country or if the testing date has already passed, please explain the reason for not taking the test and it may be waived for students whose academic credentials are adequate for evaluation of performance and potential.

IMMIGRATION: You must satisfy certain immigration regulations about which you will receive information when you apply to the United States Consulate in your country for your visa. The consul will ask for evidence that you can support yourself for the whole term that you expect to attend Virginia Intermont College. (Please do not rely upon receiving financial aid from Virginia Intermont after you come to college.) Any of the following methods will serve this purpose:

1. An affidavit, sworn by a parent or sponsor and certified by a consular official, stating this person will be responsible for your expenses while you are in the United States, and that no request for funds will be made of the host institution. This must be accompanied by evidence of the sponsor's financial capability to support you. (Employer's or bank's statement, etc.)

2. If you will use your own resources, you must submit a certified bank statement on bank letterhead, showing that sufficient resources exist to support yourself while in the U.S.

3. A letter from your embassy or other proof that you have obtained scholarship from your government or other organization.

All evidence should be notarized or attested to. If you are already in the U.S., please tell us your present visa status and expiration of stay. If you plan to transfer from another college, you must send us an I-538 (Permission to Transfer), signed by your present foreign student counselor. (We must receive the certification of financial resources and I-538 prior to granting an I-20. You must then take both forms to immigration for approval).

We will make a special effort to answer all of your correspondence promptly and by air mail so that your enrollment at Virginia Intermont College may be speeded up in every way possible. Generally, it will not be necessary for you to use registered mail in communicating with the college, as regular air mail is adequate unless you feel the necessity for extra precaution with mail leaving your country. Address correspondence regarding enrollment to Mrs. Robin Cozart, Director of Admission, Virginia Intermont College, 1013 Moore Street, Bristol, VA. 24201, USA.

The Writing Center is the place for ESL students

At the Writing Center, the foreign language student can choose from a wide range of tutorials to aid the acquisition of the English language. The most important and useful aid comes in the form of people-our student writing assistants. When an ESL student enrolls in an English composition course (Eng. 100, Eng. 101 or Eng. 102), he or she has the option of being assigned a well-trained student writing assistant. The writing assistant will tutor the ESL learner one-on-one, helping the student work through any writing problems he or she may experience. The Virginia Intermont College Writing Center is committed to teaching English to their foreign students; their success is also ours.
