Frequently Asked
Questions
What can I do with a major in Theatre?
Theatre teaches self-confidence, good communication skills, and
the ability to keep your poise under pressure. It teaches you
how to be observant and how to be more understanding of what other
people are feeling - skills that are important in many professions.
Is
an audition required for admission?
No, Virginia Intermont does not require auditions for admission.
However, it is recommended that you audition for several reasons.
First, it gives you an opportunity to visit the campus. Second,
we would like to meet you and to be able to see what level of
talent and experience you are bringing to the program so that
we are better able to plan for the coming year. Finally, only
those auditioning are eligible for a Theatre Scholarship.
How do I audition?
Auditions are held on campus and can be arranged for either the
fall or spring semester. Most students audition during Open House
Weekend, but auditions can be set up for alternate dates by contacting
the school at least two weeks prior to your visit. To prepare
for the audition, fully memorize two monologues of contrasting
styles. If you are majoring in Musical Theatre, you must perform
a song in addition to the two monologues. You may bring an
accompanist or an acccompaniment tape. If a campus
visit is absolutely impossible due to distance, we will accept
a videotape audition.
What opportunities do I have to perform?
We produce two full productions each year, one of which is a
musical. Additional performance opportunities, such as
showcases, and one-act plays, are produced throughout the year.
Can I audition for a role as a freshman?
Any student, regardless of experience or major, can audition for
a role. When two or more actors are equally suited for a role
then slight preference is given to Theatre majors.
Is scholarship money available?
Theatre Performance Scholarships are based on an audition by the
theatre faculty. New students and transfers may qualify for
scholarships of up to three-quarters tuition, renewable annually
(currently about $13,000 per year).
How long do I have to wait to take classes in
my major?
Unlike other colleges that require you to complete your core curriculum
first, Virginia Intermont lets you start taking courses in your
major your first semester.
How large will my classes be?
Core classes are sometimes as large as 25 students. Classes in
the major are much smaller with between 6 and 12 students.
Will I have the opportunity to see professional
theatre?
Barter Theatre, a professional regional theatre, is located in
Abingdon, VA, just 12 miles to our north. You will also have the
opportunity to see shows at Mill Mountain in Roanoke, VA, as well
as touring shows in Roanoke, VA, or Knoxville, TN. Each of these
locations are within a two hour drive and groups often form to
go see various productions.
Is there a difference between a BA and BFA?
A BFA focuses on theatre practice such as acting or design. It
contains other kinds of theatre courses such as history or dramatic
literature, so it usually requires more than a BA. A BA is less
concentrated and often more focused on classwork.
Is special help available if I need it?
Students Support Services works with students who are having difficulty
in class for whatever the reason. Students who need a tutor, have
a learning difficulty, or who are struggling, but may not know
why, can get the help they need from Student Support.
How is Intermont's Theatre Program different
from others?
The biggest difference is that you will get more one-on-one
attention than you would at a university. Our students have many
opportunities to perform major roles and have an avenue to shine
as an individual. We also offer a BFA and a well-rounded
curriculum in the performing arts.
