Nationally accredited by the Council on Social Work Education and guided by faculty who identify themselves as social workers first and professors second, the social work program at Virginia Intermont College offers small classes which balance theoretical content with practical application of social work skills through experiential learning, community involvement, service learning projects and a senior field practicum in a social service agency fitting the student’s interest. With the personal attention and experience of the faculty, the emphasis on relevant course content and the opportunities to apply theory to practice situations, graduates of the social work program at Virginia Intermont are well-prepared for the 11 fields of practice or for graduate work, as evidenced by our high rate of job and graduate school placement.

Our Mission is to prepare competent, ethical social work professionals with the values, knowledge, and skills to initiate and facilitate change that enhances the well-being and functioning of all types of human systems.  Within the context of values such as justice, unconditional positive regard, respect, integrity, and commitment to public service, the social work program readies students to intervene with individuals, families, groups, organizations, agencies, communities, government, and society, and helps them develop the interpersonal and leadership skills they need to carry out our professional mission at the B.S.W. level.

“Social workers affect our lives in so many ways. Their work touches all of us as individuals and as whole communities. They are educated, highly trained and committed professionals. They work in family service and community mental health agencies, schools, hospitals, nursing homes and many other private and public agencies. They listen, they care. And most importantly, they help those in need.”--North Carolina Rep. Bob Etheridge from NASW News, May 2001
