The psychology
program at Virginia Intermont College is designed to provide students
with a broad exposure to the discipline. Psychology majors
examine human behavior through courses ranging from learning and
memory to personality theories. Students are encouraged to think
critically and are given the opportunity to apply psychology to
real-world issues. In addition, psychology majors
learn to examine and critique psychological research, design psychological
tests and obtain hands-on experience in the field
of psychology through specialized computer programs and field
research.
The opportunity also exists to complete an internship in psychology.
Students work closely in a community organization that matches
their particular area of interests. The psychology experience
culminates in a final senior seminar course that is designed to
provide students with the opportunity to explore additional areas
in psychology that interest them and apply the principles obtained
in the major to their internship experience.
The psychology program gives students a chance to work closely
with the psychology faculty by offering small classes, individual
mentoring and a low student to faculty ratio. As students progress
through the major, they are assisted in exploring their own future
goals and provided guidance as they prepare for a career in the
psychology field. The psychology faculty emphasizes the need for
realizing the immediate and future needs of its students.
