Q. What does Intermont look for in prospective students?
A. Intermont wants students who are eager to become involved and make a difference. Students should be responsible citizens and appreciate the diversity that our programs have to offer.

Q. Where are most Virginia Intermont students from?
A. The majority of Virginia Intermont students are from Virginia and Tennessee. However, thirty-seven states and seven countries are represented.

Q. What are VI’s estimated costs?
A. The 2013-14 rates for full-time students (those taking 12-18 hours per semester) are:
- Residential Students: $32,391/year
- Off-Campus Students: $24,542/year

Q. Does VI offer financial aid and merit scholarships? What percentage of students receive financial aid?
A. More than 85% of Virginia Intermont students receive financial aid through scholarships, awards and grants, loans or work-study programs. The college also offers over 100 private scholarships. In order to receive an academic scholarship, freshman and transfers must have at least a 3.0 GPA. There are grade maintenance requirements for each scholarship. Performance scholarships are available for art, creative writing, equine, photography, and theatre.

Q. What is FASFA?
A. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid must be filled out using your prior year taxes information to receive any federal aid for school. All students are encouraged to apply.

Q. What payment plans does Virginia Intermont offer?
A. Virginia Intermont has a deferred payment plan that offers four payments per semester.

Q. I have a copy of my high school transcript. Can I mail a copy of the Virginia Intermont admissions office?
A. Official transcripts must be mailed to the admissions office from the high school.

Q. I have a copy of my SAT/ACT scores. Can I mail a copy to the Virginia Intermont admissions office?
A. Official scores must come from the testing center, or they will be considered official if they are posted on the high school transcripts and mailed to the admissions office.

Q. What if I have a disability?
A. Virginia Intermont’s Student Support Services can accommodate students with disabilities as long as they provide documentation from a doctor.

Q. What about campus safety?
A. The goal of the VI Security Department is to ensure the most safe and secure campus environment possible. The security officers enforce college policies as well as local, state and federal regulations. Security can be reached by calling (276) 466-7950 or (423) 335-7998. The security staff patrols the campus and parking lots on a regular basis and will provide escort services for students, faculty, and staff members upon request. Additionally, each residence hall is supervised by resident assistants, including head resident assistants who are upperclassmen and have exceptional leadership abilities.

Q. What kind of extracurricular activities does the college offer?
A. The number and range of activities assure something of interest to all students. There are intramural sports, clubs and organizations, dances, picnics, special weekends and events, concerts, receptions, tours and much more.

Q. Does VI offer opportunities to study abroad?
A. Virginia Intermont College is dedicated to providing students with the most opportunities possible. The Worrell Honors Program for Studies Abroad offers students the chance to study abroad in Germany. A maximum of 10 class hours are available for summer overseas trips. Admission into the Worrell Honors Program is competitive and limited to students with a 3.0 or better GPA. Substantial financial aid, based both on academic performance and need, is also available. VI also partners with other area colleges to offer international travel annually to China. In addition, individual departments sometimes sponsor study abroad opportunities during May term.

Q. What are the furnishings in the residence hall rooms?
A. Residence hall rooms usually consist of two beds, two closets, two chests of drawers, a sink, and two desks – some rooms have adjoining baths.

Q. Do students need to bring a computer to Virginia Intermont?
A. All residence rooms are Internet accessible; however, a computer is required only for photography majors, but recommended for all other majors. VI’s campus is equipped with four computer labs (both PC and Mac) for student use.

Q. Can I have a single room?
A. Yes, single rooms are available for an extra fee. However, most freshmen are strongly encouraged to have a roommate. Also, single rooms are extremely limited and are only offered on a seniority basis.

Q. Can students have cars at VI? Is it necessary to have a car?
A. All students are allowed to have cars, but cars are not a necessity. Many students do not have cars. Students may park on campus for a fee of $40 per year.

Q. Are students required to be insured?
A. All students are required to have medical insurance. Students are automatically enrolled in the college’s health insurance plan, but may opt out by providing proof of their insurance. Proof consists of  providing a copy of your insurance card  (front and back), and visiting the college insurance website to waive the insurance. The cost of the insurance is $260 per semester.

Q. What are the residential requirements?
A. Virginia Intermont College believes that the experience of residence hall living is a valuable part of a college experience. Therefore, students with fewer than 85 credit hours (junior status) will be required to live in the residence halls unless they are married, live with a parent or guardian within commuting distance of the college or are considered to be a part-time student (fewer than 12 hours). Students older than 21 years may also live off-campus.

Q. Is it difficult to have two majors or a major and a minor?
A. Having a double major is challenging, yet very possible to complete in four years. Students interested in double majoring will need to take full class loads and consider May term and summer term. A minor is much easier to schedule and complete in four years.

Q. How are students prepared for a job after graduation?
A. VI’s Career Development Office is designed to serve students and alumni by putting them in touch with prospective employers, compiling credentials files and conducting workshops on résumé writing and interviewing techniques. Alumni also serve as points of contact.
