VI’s Convocation Series Enlightens and Inspires Students

Virginia Intermont’s recent convocation events, which have included theatre, film and a national speaker this semester, have greatly inspired students.  Many more enriching presentations are on tap for March and April.

More than 120 students as well as faculty and staff attended the Feb. 21 presentation by Angela Rose, a national leader in the movement to bring awareness of sexual violence.  Rose gave an engaging talk based on her experience and the work she embraced after being abducted at knife point at age 17 outside a suburban Chicago shopping mall. Rose founded the grassroots nonprofit organization PAVE (Promoting Awareness, Victim Empowerment), with the mission of inspiring others to join the movement to end sexual violence. PAVE’s work has been featured on CNN, Today Show, and in several media outlets including  TIME Magazine.

In her presentation at VI, Rose brought to light the fact that one in four girls and one in six boys will be sexually assaulted before age 18. The staggering statistics surrounding sexual violence involving men, women, and children got the attention of students who often feel far removed or think “not me.”  Her message, through a multi-media presentation, empowers audiences to make changes in their communities with tangible tips on how to be supportive and how to access the tools and resources to promote education and survivor empowerment. Several students connected with Rose individually after the presentation and wanted to become involved in PAVE.

Sophomore Geneva Davis was inspired to continue the awareness campaign, and she has started looking into establishing a chapter of PAVE on campus. She is also trying to create a campus poster that will highlight the awareness and survival tips for students to keep in mind. She explained her interest: “I am passionate about the cause, and I believe in PAVE’s mission to use education and action to help survivors. I want to be able to touch the life of someone in need so they are forever changed.”

Convocation events coming up include a Latin Dance Workshop March 3, Shakespeare Workshop March 29, VI Theatre Showcase April 10, Paramount Chamber Players April 12, and Earth Day April 22.  For more on VI Convocation Series, click here.
